Also, and we say this with affection, the loose flake will find its way into your house. Every installer's truck has vinyl chips in the carpet. It's the trade's version of glitter.
Full broadcast vs light scatter
This is the distinction that actually changes your quote, and it's the one that gets blurred in bids.
Full broadcast (to refusal). The installer throws chip into the wet base coat continuously until the resin won't accept more. You end up with a floor that's essentially 100 percent chip coverage. The next day the crew scrapes the sharp standing edges down and vacuums off everything loose, then applies clear topcoats over the top.
Light or partial scatter. A deliberate, lighter throw that lets the pigmented base coat show through between chips. Uses about a third of the material, skips or shortens the scrape day, and reads as cleaner and more modern.

For a garage that parks cars and holds the lawnmower, full broadcast is the right answer nearly every time. The forgiveness is the feature.
Chip size, color, and the choice people overthink
Chip comes in 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, and 1 inch. Quarter-inch is the residential default and gives a fine, natural speckle. Eighth-inch reads almost as a solid color from standing height. Half-inch and larger give a bold terrazzo look that suits big commercial spaces and looks slightly frantic in a one-car garage.
Color blends are usually named things like Domino, Tuxedo, Coffee, Shale. Here's the practical advice nobody offers at the sample table: pick a blend with some mid-gray and some dark in it. All-light blends show every tire mark. All-dark blends show dust. Mixed blends hide both, which is the entire reason flake exists.
Look at samples in daylight, not under the shop's fluorescents, and look at a full-size sample board rather than a two-inch chip card. The pattern changes character at scale.
What a real flake install looks like, day by day
Day 1 — prep. Diamond grinding with metal-bond then resin-bond segments to an ICRI CSP 2 to 3 profile. Moisture testing per ASTM F1869 (calcium chloride, 3 pounds per 1,000 sq ft per 24 hours as the usual ceiling) or ASTM F2170 (in-situ RH probes at 75 to 80 percent). Crack chasing, joint treatment, oil dig-outs, and grinding the perimeter and corners by hand.
Day 1 or 2 — base and broadcast. A pigmented 100 percent solids epoxy base coat goes down at roughly 10 to 15 mils, and the chip goes in immediately while it's wet. This part looks like someone is angrily seeding a lawn.
Day 2 or 3 — scrape, vacuum, topcoat. Loose and standing chip comes off. Then one or two clear coats. If it's polyaspartic, foot traffic in 4 to 8 hours and vehicles in about 24. If it's epoxy or urethane clear, foot traffic in 24 to 48 hours and vehicles at 5 to 7 days.
Total: two to three days on site for most residential garages, with the vehicle wait being the part that actually affects your life.
The two things that decide whether it lasts
The grind. Not the brand of resin, not the chip, not the color. Acid etching produces a fraction of the mechanical profile that diamond grinding does, and it's the single most common reason coated floors fail. A properly bonded system fails in the concrete when pull-tested per ASTM D4541, not at the bond line.
The moisture test. A slab on grade with no vapor barrier under it can push a coating off from below no matter how well it was ground. If a bid doesn't mention testing, ask. Our one strong opinion about flake
Full flake with a polyaspartic topcoat is the best price-to-performance garage floor available, and metallic is a worse choice for a working garage no matter how good it looks online.
Here's the reasoning with a number attached. Flake at $5 to $6 a foot hides scratches, hides tire scuffs, hides the patch where the old coating was, and can be spot-repaired by grinding a small area and re-broadcasting. Metallic at $9 to $12 shows every scratch because it's a continuous reflective surface, and it can't be patched at all because the swirl pattern is made in one continuous pour.
You'd be paying roughly 70 percent more for a floor that's harder to live with. If you want the showpiece and the car mostly sits on a lift, absolutely go metallic — we cover that in metallic epoxy floor cost. For a garage that gets used, flake wins on the merits.
When you should do it yourself
Honestly: if the space is a shed, a detached shop, a storage bay, or a basement where no car parks, buy a good 100 percent solids kit and rent a grinder for about $100 a day. Roughly $400 to $600 all in, and you'll get 5 to 8 solid years. Broadcasting flake by hand is genuinely satisfying and very hard to do badly, because the chip hides your technique. That's the whole point of chip.
Two things will sink a DIY flake floor, and neither is the flake: skipping the mechanical grind, and coating a slab that's pushing moisture. Rent the grinder. Tape a two-foot square of plastic sheeting to the slab overnight per ASTM D4263 and see if it's damp underneath in the morning. That's a free test and it'll tell you whether to call someone.
